Telechoice NSW Premier League - Round 16

With two games washed out over the weekend, four interesting results paved the way to what looks like a very interesting battle for finals positions over the final stretch of the 2009 season.

Sutherland Sharks 3 - 0 Wollongong CFC
Sutherland continue along their merry way with a comfortable home victory against the cellar dwellars of the league. With the victory Sutherland maintain their comfortable position within the Top 5, though with the three teams in pursuit holding games in hand the Sharks position could come under threat in the long run. Wollongong on the other hand will need a miracle if they are to climb off the bottom of the ladder. Ten points behind with six games remaining, Wollongong will be focusing on Club Championship points from here on in. When reality eventually sinks in though, it will be a shame for the league to see Wollongong drop down to the Super League.

Marconi Stallions 1 - 2 Sydney United
A game marred by a red card to the Stallions in the opening 15 minutes, Sydney United won't care as the victory sees them take a seven point lead atop the Premier League table. Marconi still sit relatively comfortable within the Finals positions, given their two games in hand over most of the other competitors, though chasing points in the run-in to the finals is a much tougher propostion as opposed to having the points already on the board. Expect these two sides to meet again further down the track.

Blacktown City Demons 1 - 1 Sydney (APIA) Tigers
A result which does neither the Tigers or Demons much good. The point to either side drops them further out of finals reckoning, though APIA will again have to question themselves as to why they can't seem to win these type of games. With Blacktown to nine men, and APIA holding onto a 1-0 advantage going into injury time, The Demons through Tyler Simpson somehow managed to score a miracle result with a miracle bicycle-kick goal. APIA, with arguably the strongest squad in the entire league will again have to sit back and refect on another wasted season.

Sydney Olympic 3 - 2 Penrith Nepean United
A vital victory for Olympic, putting them back into a position to threaten for an end of season finals run. Nepean on the other hand are virtually out of the race, though nothing should be taken away from a side which has defied all pre-season critics and competed well for the 2009 season. Olympic, with a squad capable of challenging for Championship glory find themselves in a position teetering on the brink of the Top 5, though whether or not Mark Bosnich and his men from Belmore compete in this years Finals series is still very doubtful.
